GreenOil Standard began with a single visionary: Lars Brejnbjerg, a lifelong advocate for green and sustainable technologies. In the 1980s, Lars was part of the pioneering team behind the Mini-el – known in Denmark as the “Ellert” – one of the world’s first small electric cars. Later, he was recruited by a local company to develop a more sustainable approach to oil maintenance.
As Lars explored the market, he quickly discovered a critical gap: no existing solution effectively removed water from oil without compromising quality or efficiency. Determined to change that, he set out to develop the ideal system from the ground up.
He began with particle filtration, using natural sheep wool, chosen for its exceptional particle retention and robust fiber structure. Then came his breakthrough in water separation: by applying indirect heating to the oil surface, he could transfer heat to the water contamination far more efficiently than traditional direct-heating methods. Early prototypes used a repurposed kitchen kettle element, but results were remarkable — the method proved to be more than 10 times as effective as known evaporation systems.
With successful field tests and patented principles in place, local investors saw the potential. In 2008, GreenOil Standard was founded with the ambition to bring this innovation to a global market.
